Gifts in Honor or Memory of Someone Special
When you make a donation to IRFCID, you can choose to make that gift in honor of or in memory of anyone you choose. This is a meaningful way to pay tribute to someone while supporting our mission to providing funding for medical research, patient resources and supporting new treatments and clinical trials that are geared toward finding how the immune system can be harnessed to treat and control cancer and to cure other diseases and disorders that attack the immune system. In addition, it allows you to remember a loved one's life or celebrate a special occasion. When you make a donation to IRFCID, you'll be asked as part of the check-out process whether your gift is in honor or memory of someone. If it is, we can send a note to the person or family indicated notifying them of your thoughtful donation but not revealing the amount of the donation.
Match Your Gift
Does your employer have a matching gift program? Many employers offer matching gift programs to encourage employees to contribute to charitable organizations. Most of these programs match contributions dollar for dollar, and some will even double or triple the amount of your gift! To find out if your employer offers matching donations, check with the human resources or corporate giving personnel at your office.
Transfer Stocks
Giving a gift of publicly traded stock that has increased in value and that you have owned for more than one year may provide greater tax benefits than giving cash. Your charitable income tax deduction is equal to the fair market value of the stock and you avoid paying the capital gains tax on any increase in the current value over the original cost of the stock. You may also save by not incurring brokerage fees because you are transferring ownership rather than selling the stock. Contact your tax advisor for more information.
To transfer your securities to IRFCID, first advise IRFCID that you will be making the donation; we do not receive any information about you from your broker, and in order to properly acknowledge your gift we only need to know the type of stock and number of shares you are donating.
Remember IRFCID in Your Will or Trust
Planned giving incorporates your charitable gift with your overall financial, tax, and estate planning goals to maximize benefits to both you and IRFCID. There can also be significant tax advantages for donating to a 501(c)(3) organization. Through a bequest, you may perpetuate your current level of giving or make a major gift that might not otherwise be possible (for instance, you may need to retain liquidity during your lifetime). This type of gift can provide you with comfort in knowing that your generosity will extend beyond your lifetime.
Because this is such an important decision for you, we encourage you to contact us to discuss your options before making a commitment. We would also be happy to speak to your representative, such as a lawyer or financial advisor. It is highly recommended that you consult with your own tax or legal advisors prior to making a planned gift.
Donate from Your IRA
If you own an IRA and are age 70 or over you can directly transfer, tax-free, up to $100,000 this year to IRFCID. Eligible IRA owners can take advantage of this provision, regardless of whether you itemize your deductions. Distributions from employer-sponsored retirement plans, including SIMPLE IRAs and Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) plans are not eligible. To qualify, the funds must be contributed directly by the IRA trustee to IRFCID. Amounts so transferred are not taxable and no deduction is available for the amount given to the charity. Talk with your tax planner about taking advantage of this limited-time opportunity.
